What is Acupuncture & How Does it Work ?
Acupuncture is a traditional healing practice, rooted in Chinese Medicine, with a history spanning over 3,000 years. It involves the gentle insertion of fine needles to stimulate the flow of qi ("chee") throughout the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine , it's believed that when the flow of qi is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to pain, illness, and a range of other health issues. The body contains 12 primary channels, each with acupuncture points linked to specific functions. As acupuncturists, our aim is to restore balance by redirecting or unblocking the flow of qi to support optimal health.
Through a Western lens, acupuncture works in several ways to support the body’s natural healing processes. The insertion of needles into specific points stimulates the release of endorphins to help manage pain, while boosting neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine to regulate mood. Acupuncture also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body into a state of "rest and digest," which promotes deep relaxation and allows bodily processes like digestion to function optimally. Additionally, acupuncture improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and accelerates healing. By leveraging these mechanisms, acupuncture supports a wide range of health concerns and is increasingly recognized for its holistic approach to wellness.
